Over 20,000 Solar Systems installed for poor households through BRD #CanaChallenge

September 22, 2022

#CanaChallenge is a Corporate Social Responsibility campaign launched in December 2021 by the Development Bank of Rwanda with the aim of contributing to the Government of Rwanda’s objective of connecting all Rwandan households to electricity by 2024.

Specifically, the initial goal of #Canachallenge was to empower 10,000 poor families in remote rural areas by connecting them to electricity through off-grid solar panels. Through this initiative, BRD mobilized its partners, clients, and the Rwandan community at large (local and abroad) as well as friends of Rwanda to contribute 15,000Frw/solar panel for one family.

The challenge was whole-heartedly accepted via social media and community gatherings and to date, Rwandans and friends of Rwanda have mobilized funding to light up more than 24,000 households.

Over 20,000 home solar systems have already been installed across the country with the following geographical distribution:

  • Eastern Province: 5,518 poor Households
  • Western Province: 4,640 poor Households
  • Southern Province: 4,471 poor Households
  • Northern Province: 6,788 poor Households

Through #CanaChallenge off-grid connections, Rwandan families will have access to green energy to light up their homes, own a radio and charge a mobile phone; more importantly it will provide them with a dignified livelihood, integrating them further to the world.
