ALGIERS – Mr. Ali Aoun, on Friday, took office as Minister of Pharmaceutical Industry, following his appointment, on Thursday, by the President of the Republic, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune, as part of a ministerial reshuffle.

Aoun, thus, replaced Mr. Abderrahmene Djamel Lotfi Benbahmed, who had held this position since January 2020. The handover ceremony took place at the Ministry’s headquarters, in the presence of sector executives and heads of institutions under supervision.

On this occasion, the new minister wished to thank President Tebboune for “the confidence he placed in him”, and in his predecessor for the efforts made “in a difficult situation characterized by a multitude of pressures, in particular those of lobbies “.

Mr. Aoun indicated that “the roadmap for the sector is already drawn”, highlighting the need to “address some shortcomings, particularly the scarcity of certain drugs”.

To deal with this situation, he insisted on strengthening local production. “The drug market in Algeria should be covered by locally produced drugs. This is the only solution,” he said.

Mr. Aoun undertook, in this sense, to “multiply investments in the pharmaceutical industry sector” through the facilitation of access to investment.

For his part, Mr. Benbahmed indicated that the experience and skills of his successor will give “new impetus” to the sector.

Mr. Ali Aoun had held the position of Director General of the Central Hospital Pharmacy (PCH) since last March.

He served between 1995 and 2008 as CEO of the Saidal group.
