Algeria wants to integrate the Spanish electricity market

NEWSROOM (ADV) – Algerian and Spanish authorities are conducting talks aimed at bringing Algeria’s surplus electricity supply to the Spanish market, Algerian Energy Minister Mustapha Guitouni said on Monday.

Through this approach, the Algerian group of electricity and gas (Sonelgaz) wants to go abroad to earn foreign currency and no longer depend on state aid plans.

“It is high time for the Sonelgaz group to develop its export business, as Sonatrach (the national hydrocarbons group) has already done,” in order to “boost its investments and stop counting on the state,” he said. Mr. Guitouni, who specifies that between 5,000 and 7,000 MW produced by Sonelgaz remain unexploited.

Last November 20, Guitouni announced that his country had made an official request to join the European interconnections market, thus allowing the export of surplus electricity produced from solar energy to Europe.
