Algerie Telecom legally required to unbundle local loop

Algeria’s incumbent PSTN operator Algerie Telecom (AT) is now legally mandated to provide rivals with access to its fixed broadband network via local loop unbundling (LLU) following the entry into force of the new Post and Telecommunications Code on 6 June 2018, reports Agence Ecofin. Under the new law, AT must offer access under transparent and non-discriminatory terms upon request from a licensed operator. Alternative operators have long argued for the enforcement of LLU obligations on AT, a move which telecoms minister Houda Imane Faraoun has been attempting to push through since 2016, with the aims of reducing broadband tariffs and expanding high speed internet access.
