Global Tech Company Huawei Opens East Africa Training Center in Kenya

Huawei, a global technology and telecommunications company based in Shenzhen, China, has launched a purpose-built regional training centre in Kenya as the firm moves to facilitate a technical skills transfer program in the country.

The firm said that the new training centre, located at Huawei’s head office campus in Kenya’s capital of Nairobi, will provide a global standard training environment for regional trainees on new generation computing, telecommunication and related technologies.

“This training center will increasingly focus on providing training on new technologies including 4G, IoT, cloud computing and Software Defined Networks (SDN)/Network Functions Virtualisation (NFV),” explained Huawei Technologies East Africa Head of Learning Services, Peter Thuo.

Speaking during the launch, he added that the facility aims to build Information and Communication Technology (ICT) skills among employees and key players in the ICT ecosystem in the region in order to drive the industry while enhancing Kenya’s leading role in East Africa.

Engineer John Tanui of Kenya’s Konza Technopolis Development Authority (KoTDA), who was taught at a previous training center and Huawei’s global training center in Shenzhen, commended the move.

“Building ICT skills for our youth is very crucial to the success of the country’s economic transformation agenda, and it is for this reason that the Kenyan government is establishing an advanced institute for science and technology at Konza Technopolis which will focus in research and postgraduate programs, including ICT,” he said.

The new training center is part of a commitment Huawei made through a Memorandum of Understanding with Kenya’s ICT Authority.

The agreement seeks to build ICT capacity and skills in Kenya and is also part of an initiative dubbed the ‘Seeds for the Future’ training program, which is aimed at empowering undergraduate students across the region.

Minister Counsellor for the Chinese Embassy in Kenya, Mr. Li Xuhang said that Kenya has become a frontrunner of ICT in East Africa, thanks to innovative companies like Huawei who constantly bring their state-of-the-art technologies into the local market.

He praised Huawei for basing their East Africa Training Center in Nairobi and showing their commitment to cultivating local ICT talent.
