PSA plans to bring Maruti Suzuki Swift competitor; expects to rollout by 2020

The Indian subsidiary of French automaker PSA will launch its first product in Indian market by 2020.

Sources close to the development informed ETAuto that the PSA Group will launch its first car by 2020, codenamed SC21 will be the competitor to Maruti Suzuki Swift and will sit between Hyundai Grand i10 and Maruti Suzuki Baleno, in terms of positioning.

The carmaker is expected to bring out two to three variants of the car.

The carmaker is planning to meet the top suppliers like Motherson Sumi, Uno Minda, Spark Minda, and the Rane Group to source the parts of the SC21 in Chennai.

Moreover, the French automaker has to place the request for quotation to the component suppliers for more than 4 lakh cars.

Out of these, one lakh cars will be produced at the Chennai Plant, which was previously owned by Hindustan Motors, while the components for the rest of three lakh will be exported to other markets like Brazil land South Africa.

The SC21 will essentially fall in compact hatchback segment, which is the second-fastest growing segment in India, after the compact SUV segment.

The compact segment increased 11 per cent between April and October 2017. Most of the carmakers have placed their products in this segment, but only few have tasted the success.

When launched, the SC21 will compete against the likes of Maruti Suzuki Swift, Hyundai Grand i10, Mahindra KUV 100 and Fiat Punto.
